The project granted by the European Commission for “The Centre of Information Gathering and Awareness Raising on International and Internal Migration in Turkey” launched its operation on 1 March 1999. The name of the centre was designated as “Migration and Asylum Information Center of Turkey - TÜGBIM.”
A data-base and documentation center will be developed within ASAM to contribute to a thorough analysis of mechanisms and dynamics of migration taking place in Turkey and surrounding regions (ie., Europe, Caucuses, the Middle East and North Africa). The database will provide a variety of information about international migration to Turkey.
A series of workshops will be organised in order to facilitate the discussions around policy and awareness issues related to the refugees and asylum-seekers. Participants of the workshop will be the stakeholder groups including: representatives from the Ministries of Interior Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Labor, and Justice; policy makers and Members of the Parliament; academicians; representatives of the relevant foreign embassies and international organisations (ie., UNHCR); and representatives from NGOs.
ASAM will produce a series of publications as a result of the activities
above:
a) A newsletter will be published to inform the organisation’s members,
stakeholder groups and general public about the organisation’s activities.
The newsletter will include highlights from the data collected for the
data-base, new collections added to the documentation center, information
and highlights from the research that is conducted by using ASAM’s data-base.
b) Academic research papers: Academicians will be encouraged to produce
academic research papers using the database developed by ASAM.
c) Policy discussion papers: A discussion paper will be prepared after
each workshop mentioned above (ie., identification of the issues and problems,
policy recommendations, action plan for implementation, follow up).
